HEXAGON CLIMBER
This project is one element of the San Jose Children’s Discovery Museum expansion. The design prompt for the outdoor expansion was the intersection of mathematics and nature. This climbing structure resembles the hexagonal structures created by bees. One side has square edges while the other has natural curves that emulate the organic geometry of honeycomb cells. A wide variety of skills were required for this project including processing lumber with a table saw and jointer, precision cutting angles with the miter saw, joining angled components with a domino joiner, rounding edges with a router, carving curves with a jigsaw, covering hardware with wood plugs, and finally weatherization with marine grade finish.
