CALIFORNIA POPPY SCULPTURE
This public art project is located in El Cerrito. It is a large-scale sculpture of a California Golden Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) that features three flowers in different stages of the reproduction cycle. It is fashioned entirely from 316 stainless steel. The leaves were cut with a water jet machine while the petals were cut manually with a plasma torch. The leaves and flowers were formed using blacksmithing techniques to accomplish an organic shape. The stems were curved using a manual tubing roller. Prior to fabrication, a full size mockup was created from a drawing using aluminum tubes, cardboard, and even a pool noodle.
